Mystery and Melancholy of a Street (1914) by Giorgio de Chirico The expression of the dreamlike reality seems to rely on the subject matter of the girl with her hoop, approaching a ghastly shadow in the empty street. A closer look reveals how the buildings, formed by the rules of linear perspective, are contradicted by the isometric shape of the wagon, thus making the buildings seem distorted. The sinister atmosphere is further reinforced by the perspective of the two colonnades which negate each other. the left defines the horizon lying high up, the right defines it somewhere below the center of the picture. "The rising street with the bright colonnade is only a treacherous mirage guiding the child to a plunge into nothingness" (Arnheim, 1974). The example illustrates how de Chirico used established rules of perspective in order to create a convincing illusion, but his combination of disparate spatial systems creates an uneasy feeling when looked at. The expression of the picture is possibly evident to attentive viewers, but they may not be aware of the artistic means that created the expression.
